Christmas stories may come and go but methinks I’ll always cherish the one about the four-year-old who labored daily to learn her part in the Sunday School pageant. The part, a prayer, was a little hard for the child to understand and she had no little difficulty mastering it.
The night before the pageant, “One more time, dear”. Little Gracie again patiently stumbled over the prayer to her attentive mother—who, satisfied, went back to the kitchen.
Uncle Cap, driven frantic by the unceasing chant and by pride in his niece’s oratory abilities pitched down his “Esquire” and called the child to him.
At the Sunday School pageant, Mom and pop beamed in the front row as Gracie, angelic in a white dress, stepped forward, folded her hands and bowed her head. Her childish voice broke through the hush in the closing prayer:
“Christmas comes but once a
year
Apple Jack and ’Simmon beer
If I get drunk, I don’t keer
Cause Christmas comes but
once a year.”
(Evidently Uncle Cap patronized a different Sunday School).
Miss Mary Massie Lea, and Magruder Keyser attended a dance in Front Royal Thursday.
