The banks and post offices say they don’t fret another of those closed days until May 30. Monday was a holiday because of what Mr. Allie Slaughter referred to as • “George Birthington’s Washday.”
Some of us never have become quite used to a holiday falling on Monday if the regular holiday dates on Sunday. The custom can’t be so very old, for some of us can well remember when such was not the case. If a holiday came on Sunday, then Monday was a working day.
Here some years ago there Was talk of placing every holiday on the Friday after its date, thereby giving a week-fend holiday from Thursday night to Monday morning for every occasion. (Nobody works on Saturday, except, of course, farmers and all other people who work for themselves.) The plan hasn’t been heard from since ; it didn’t get past the suggestion stage.
