Word has come around that a bunch of shyster septic-tank cleaners have been into the county again. They’re a smooth crowd of workers. They fill the customer with oily words of all the references they have (they never can present any papers from a health officer) and they even resort to threats about how the health department 'Will drag you off to jail before sundown.
Charges are exhorbitant. These so-called septic tank cleaners manage to clean the pocketbook. The cash they keep; the contents of the septic tank they dump on the property of some neighbor who finds it out later — and is mad enough to bite ten-penny nails in two!
It might be a good idea to have the county license bona fide septic tank cleaners. Then, when a group approaches, the farmer (it’s usually the farm wife), can ask to see the license signed by a county officer.
The safest protection at present is to tell all septic tank cleaners 'when they arrive at your door: “Wait until I call the local health officer. If he thinks this workshould be done, then I’ll call you. Just give me your name and telephone number.” If they are a reputable company,4 they will give a name and telephone; and then the health officer will let you know if work is necessary on the septic tank.
