INFLATION POSSIBILITY MUST NOT BE IGNORED

Testimony given the Senate Banking and Currency Committee last week by members of the President's Cabinet and the Director of the Budget prompted me to join with eleven other members of the committee in sponsoring a stand-by wage and price control bill.

This bill would permit either the President or the Congress, in ait emergency, to freeze wages and prices for a ninety-day period. It would protect us from the kind of inflation which started after the outbreak of war in Korea and threatened to reach serious proportions* before a law could be passed to deal with it.

The Secretary of State told us that our nation is now under the heaviest military pressure which has existed since the Korean war began in June 1950 and that this pressure probably will continue for some years because the communists hope they can make our economy crack under the strain of supporting defense forces. The Director of the Budget indicated we would have a deficit for 'this fiscal year and that balancing the budget for the fiscal year starting next June will be extremely difficult if the Treasury suffers a tax cut

Sych a situatipn is discouraging. Firemen are sincere in their work. They hate to see fire beat them. Nothing rewards them for their hard work like the satisfaction of knowing they have helped save a man’s barn or his home. The other side of the picture is a pitiful sight: grown men have been seen to sit in dejection (some times in tears) and watch fire destroy a home while they are helpless..

“Help your firemen” is the plea that comes from the members of the three companies in the county. Help yourself and help your firemen by cleaning out fire hazards around the farm.
