CpI. William L. Ramey, “Bin/’ to his Rappahannock friends, was highly praised in a letter of appreciation from Major Sam Almon to his Com- manding Officer at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, on June 4.

The citation reads as follows;

On May 22, 1953 I was flying as pilot on the Second Air Force Courier on a C-47 type aircraft. A/2c William L. Ramey, AF 13387055, 809th Operations Squadron, was the engineer. It was necessary to feather the right engine at an altitude of 700 feet after take off from Brookley Air Force Base, Mobile, Alabama. Norma single engine procedure was accomplished.

After turning on the approach and trying to put the landing gear down, it , became apparent that the hydraulic pump on the left engine was either malfunctioning or completely inoperative. The gear was hanging down and I could neither lock it down nor pull ' it up. A/2c Ramey changed the \ hydraulic pump selector several times but could not get any hydraulic pressure. V, I successfully attempted a single r engine go-around procedure and tried to make co-pilot understand that the right engine should be started. I instructed A/2c Ramey to start the engine, which he did immediately. ' Hydraulic pressure came up when the engine started and a successful landing was made.

A/2c Ramey acted with remarkable coolness and dispatch during the entire emergency. It is unusual to find an individual so young and with such * little experience, who can keep, his I head so well during an emergency. Airman Ramey's quick action and understanding of the problem undoubtedly saved the arcraft and possibly injury, if not the lives, of the crew and seven passengers aboard.
