Many years have slipped by since that date. My memory’s good. When I see these sun-worshippers, I cringe; I wish I might tell them what I learned so sadly—hut positively. They wouldn’t listen. They, too, must learn the hard way.
They tell me that man has conquered the air, the water, and the earth, but there are three things he’ll never defeat: the horses, John Barleycorn, and Old Sol.

Not so long ago a complaint was mailed to Rappahannock News from a former county citizen, w'hose body is out of the county, but evidently her heart remains in the mountains. She objected when the counties of Richmond, Lancaster, Northumberland, and Westmoreland crowned a queen “Miss Rappahannock” at some local festivities. Of course, we know they picked up the name from the river and they probably didn’t give the little county a thought. I agree with the former citizen; I’m inclined to think we have an exclusive right to use the name—'but then, come to think of it, suppose they had to use the name of just any river or creek that ran through their territory? “Miss Muddy Run” wouldn’t sound very queenly, or maybe "Miss Turtle 'Creek” or “Miss Blackwater Creek”
