The annual drive for Reel Cross memberships and funds which of4 ficially opens March 1, will get under way in Rappahannock soon, according o Mrs. Kathleen Lawrence, Chapter Chairman. Mrs. G. W. Smith of Flint Hill, who heads the fund drive, ur&es generous contributions to enable the county to surpass its $1120 quota for the relief of suffering not only locally but throughout the United States and the world. The membership quota for 1954 is 600.
As everyone knows, or should ... know* that the American Red Cross is the only organization that helps __cveryone in-need in-4imcs-of-disaster.-" The word “disaster” covers many things„.fires, tornadoes, hoods, damage done by explosions, or any other emergency. An emergency is defined as “immediate help.” No other organization helps more people during a disaster than the Red Cross.
The blood bank maintained by the Rappahannock County Chapter of the Red Cross provides blood needed by any citizen of the county. During 1953 sixty-eight (68) pints of blood were used free of Any cost except hospital administration charges, by Rappahannock citizens at the University of Va. Hospital, Charlottesville. Cost would have been $1700 at $25 a pint. Our chapter contributed to the National Blood Program which provided blood that saved thousands of our soldiers tites. The chapter also collected blood, for the gamma globulin program. -
^ Besides the reKef work, the Red Cross sponsored water safety training for the youngsters in the county. About one hundred and twenty-five children and young people enrolled with thirty-two (32) completing the course and receiving certificates. S.F.V.C. Sponsors Basketball Game
The Rappahannock High School basketfball teams will meet the Sperryyille Volunteer Fire Company boys and girls in a thriller-diller Thursday night (tonight) at 7:30 in the Sperryville auditorium. All proceeds will /go to the Fire Company.
