ed by that of other witnesses, was that the whole economy of Hawaii is at the mercy of a single labor union which controls workers in shipping and in the pineapple and sugar industries; that the leadership of this union is openly communist and that through economic pressure these union leaders could at least exercise a “veto’* power over the selection of men whom the State of Hawaii would send to serve in the United States Senate and House of Representatives. That testimony was not only substantiated by an immigration official who testified before the Jenner Committee on Subversive Activities but he likewise called alttention to the fact that Statehood for Hawaii would make it possible for thousands of aliens in the Hawaiian Islands, some of whom may be communists, to freely visit our mainland from which they can now be excluded. It would certainly make a farce of our immigration laws which prohibit alien communists from entering our country to enable spies who wish to operate in our country to enter by way of Hawaii.
With the international situation aS critical as it is today I think we should be wary of action which Would make it possible for followers of the Kremlin to influence the selection of members of the Congress who would be sympathetic with their viewpoint if not actually subject to their direction, to say nothing of abandoning the historic concept of the Monroe Doctrine which has so far limited our territorial expansion.
