Smokey, the Fire Preventin’ Bear, asks everyone to please be on the lookout for his large heliumfilled balloon. This balloon escaped from its cord in Bristol and was last* seen heading toward Abingdon. The balloon cost Smokey approximately $150.00 and he has toed it in several towns and cities to remind folks to be extra careful with their cigarettes and help him prevent forest fires. Smokey’* balloon measures about 10 feet long and 5 feet wide. Anyone having any information should contact their District Forester or Chef Forest Warden of their respective counties. Smokey will appreciate your interest in this matter and asks you to “Remember, only you can prevent forest fires."

Naturalist Programs

To Begin At Park

The woods are full of ’em—and whether they’re plant or animal in • the Shenandoah National Park, there are experienced naturalists; at the Park’s two tourist centers to tell about them.

The National Park Service gan its annual national program at Big Meadows Lodge Saturday, April 9, and guided trips through the Park will begin May 10. Big Meadows Lodge is one of the resort areas on the Skyline Drive in the Park. It opens April 8. The other is Skyland, opening May 30.

Lectures are scheduled Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays through May 21. The remainder of the lecture schedule is, as follows: From May 21 through June 25, Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; from June 26 through September 3, daily except Sundays and Tuesdays and from September 4 through October 29, Mondays, Wednesdays arid Saturdays.
