The latest figures show that from 1919-2.1 and from 193941, Virginia white males lagged 1 years behind the national white male in length of life, while the white females in Virginia lagged one-half year behind the national average. By 1949-51, this lag had been cut to one-third of a year for the white males, while Virginia white females had advanced to four-fifths of a year above the- national average.

Thirty-five states have made a greater advance than Virginia in life expectancy for white men, and 22 states have made a greater advance for white women. Twelve states now have a longer life expectancy than Virginia. The advances, Dr. Garnett says, can be traced largely to better techniques in medicine and education of the public in health problems.
