There is still time for those eligible to receive the protection of the polio vaccine against paralytic polio. More than 10,000,000 children received one or more injections of the Salk Polio vaccine in 1955. Surveys show that the vaccine was 80% effective in preventing against paralytic polio.
The poliomyelitis vaccination program adopted at a meeting on May 2, 1956, by a group consisting of the Surgeon General, and other members of the Public . Health Service, representatives of professional (Medical) orgsmizations, the State and Territorial Health Officers, and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, urges that vaccination programs be continued and expanded during the summer months, which are periods of increasing occurence of polio, and that every effort should be made to give the first two doses, to each person who is in the group elegible.
The dosage schedule recommended is to give the second dose four weeks (preferably) after the first and the third (a booster) dose no less than seven months after the second.
One dose of polio vaccine gives some protection against paralytic polio (apparently more .protection than was expected). Two doses gives good protection against paralytic polio. Three doses (third, or booster, seven months after the second ) gives full immunization. The question of additional “booster” doses is undecided.
Polio vaccine is of no use in treating polio. It is protective against the three types of paralytic polio. For this reason a child who has had an attack of polio should be given the vaccine, as chances are that the polio was caused by only one type. , All elegible persons are urged to get the polio vaccine—from the family physician or contact the local Health Department.
