NEW PARTIES AT LAST?
Like all Americans, wafwere saddened by the news ol President Eisenhower’s sicjtness last week. However, taking an accomplished fact for what it -is, the question arises, what effect will Mr. Eisenhower’s illness have on the political situation this fall?
Should the President hold to his decision to run foi reelection, it is certain that he will be nominated and probable that he will be elected. In that event, the Republicans are all set, and the only intra-party strife will be in the Democratic Party.
Should the President decide not to run, however, the Republicans, lacking the magnetic attraction of “Ike,” wil; be faced with the same internal strife that is presentlj causing such stress and strain in the Democratic Party.
It would then seem to us a good time for the conservatives and liberals to stop fighting each other within a part} and put the fight on a national electicve basis where tht people could voice their opinions and make those opinions felt* It is a patent absurdity to see such men as Senatoi Byrd, Senator Robertson and Representative Burr Harrisor working with and for the same party as Senators Lehmar and Morse, or Governors Williams and Harriman. The Re publicans have equal difficulty reconciling the views of.th< Dewey-Brownell faction.
The really shameful aspect of the present party systerr is that the majority of Americans, thinking pretty mucl along the same lines, yet voting independently, cancel oul their own votes, because of allegiance to different out-moded parties. Meanwhile, political pressure groups such as the NAACP or the CIO Political Action Committee, have beer exercising undue political influence because their block voting members can swing the balance, after the majority averaged itself out. .
Should Eisenhower not run this fall, therefore, il would appear to us to be an excellent time to end this anachronism of Democratic and Republican parties, to formulate Conservative and Liberal parties, and give the American people something to vote for, thereby ehding the reigr of highly organized minority pressure groups.
