I have worlted in the Old House Office Buildijig for 10 years, and 1 have not bden aware that it has become such a broken-down, outmoded, disgraceful structure as to require $9,00(0,000 of the taxpayer’s money tc put it in presentable shape.
The magn ficence of the plans is defended by some architects and members of Congress as necessary to preserve tfie monumental aspect of the capital area. While it may be that the {increasing volumn of Congressional business justifies provision of jsome additional working space, If believe most citizens will be satisfied with the Capitol and other handsome monumental buildings ini Washington and will not demand that special pains be taken to injure that their elected Representatives and- Senators perform their office work in gilded elegance.
