The Virginia Rural Safety council, commenting on the report, gave some details on safety activities by rural citizens and member groups of the Council which may have contributed to the drop:
For instance, the Virginia Federation of Home Demonstration Clubs went all-out in an effort to promote driver education, both in the schools and among its club members. An adult driver education program, organized <m county bases, is gaining momentum. Forums and TV programs on safe driving were sponsored, and traffic safety was stressed at a workshop at the Federation’s annual meeting. One county, Campbell, won first in the National Home Demonstration Counctil’s highway safety contest.
Four-H clubs also have stressed traffic safety in their programs and public exhibits, and have been provided information and guidance by state troopers and members of thl Governor’s Highway Safety Committee. FFA groups likewise have taken part in educational safety programs. . Rurltan, Farm Bureau, and Grange organizations havs sponsored safety programs and exhibits in rural areas.
The Council, throughout the year, supplied a steady stream of information to the press, radio, and TV on not only traffic safety, but many other phases of safe living; and prepared exhibits for such events as the Atlantic Rural Exposition in Richmond, at which information on safety was distributed.'
