In the 1WM period tnere was a 39% decrease in dairy farms and a 73% increase in milk sold. Milking parlors, pipe line milkers, and vat holding tanks encourage larger farms. The use of modern machinery is the most obvious way or reducing labor requirements on farms. It is substitute for labor. The increased production per worker is due to the difference in machinery and not in the worker himself. On the other hand on some farms it might be important to make an investment to increase productivity of labor than to make a labor saving investment in machinery, in other words will the labor saved be used more profitably elsewheere on the farm.
