CROSSROADS
. We have just finished reading a new novel by Mr. John Beaty entitled Crossroads. Mr- Beaty who is temporarily living in Texas,was born and raised in Greene County.
Crossroads is the story of young men and women in Pied mont, Virginia, their problems of love and marriage in the shadow of oncoming World War II. More especially Crossroads shows the impact of a new highway on a rural community and the resultant conflict between the old mores ami the modern ideas that invade the area with or because of the highway. As the author says in his postscript to Crossroads, “In this book the American reader will find neither the dashing calvaliers and delicate ladies of one school of Southern fiction, nor the lewd and violent scoundrels of the other. He will find on-the contrary in documented detail, and with the utmost fidelity to fact, a picture of life in the South as it is actually livedInteresting
and readable in any event, Crossroads is doubly interesting to readers in this particular area for its locale is our part of Piedmont, Virginia. The places, the names, the type of people are alll familiar to us. It is published by the Wilkinson Publishing Company of 1717 Wood st, Dallas, Texas
Incidentally, Mr. Beaty writes that he will be retiring this year and plans to return to Greene County to liveB.
