The widest difference in cost of production between the two yields was the fertilizer cost. On an average there was about $15.00 more spent for fertilizer for the 80 bushels yield than for the 40 bushels yield. Many of the cost of other production practices, such as plowing, s^ed bed preparation and cultivating were about the same for the high and low yields. A comparison of the cost of production figures clearly shows the efficiency in ysing adequate fertilizer in conjunction with other good production practices.
Corn yields of 100 or more bushels per acre are not uncommon in Rappahannock today, however th«> average yield ift the county in 1950 was 43.8 bushels per acre. With the modern methods of corn production that are being used todaj* 150 bushels or more per acre are not the curiosity that they once were.
