production will usually l|e deep and well drained. Level land not subject to erosion should be used. Where corn is grown on slopes strip-cropping, contour tillage and other soil and water conserving practices should be used.

Fertile soils where well managed crop rotations are followed are lexcellent conditions for corn productions for corn production. This system would usually be where corn follows a legumegrass sod or a cover crop. Cover crops and crop residues should be plowed under several weeks before planting.

The soil should be tested and lime applied as needed for that particular soil, other crops to blf grown in the rotation and other conditions. Generally the soil should test between 6.0 and 6.5pH

Fertilize Liberally

A high level of soil fertility is needed for profitable production. The fertility level will depend mainly upon past management plus plant nutrients applied for that particular crop.

In Virginia the main plant nutrients used for corn production are nitrogen, phosphate and potash. The amount of each of these used would deHrnd upon many factors. Some of these factors are (1) fertility level of the soil (2) the type of soil, and (3) past management. Theje are conditions in Rappahannock where the fertilizer applied might vary from a fertilizer of a 1-2-2 ratio to one that was a 1-1-1 ratio. A soil test will inricate the le#“l of fertility and can be used as a guide in aftnlving the proper amount of analysis of fertilizer.

Generally in Rappahannock from 660 to 600 pounds of a complete fWfifeer is recommened with the addition of nitrogen where needed.

As indicated by manv corn crons nitrogen will most likely be the limiting plant nutrient in corn production. The amount of nitrogen used and time of application will depend upon the soil,! past management and the nitrogen applied at time of planting. In Vir
