Americans are ever ready with their money, their time, and their skills to contribute to the general well-being with no thought of any immediate or direct reward to themselves.
The impulse finds expression in many ways, from a neighborhood improvement association to any one of the quarter million churches in the land, from an art center to a museum or library, from a symphony orchestra to one of the more than 5,000 philanthropic foundations with assets exceeding $6 billion. It is the dime dropped into the “red heart” at the drug store; it is the millions donated by corporations to educational institutions.
Nowhere else in the world is so much achieved by voluntary effort as in the United States. Perhaps this is because nowhere else is so much achieved by the profit motive, which makes it possible for any man to lift his economic status through work and skill.
Whatever the reason, we ought all to be piroud—and conscious— of the non-profit motive. It distinguishes us from the rest of the world.
