Although he stfms to have hastened to add that he thinks General Robert E. I>ee one of the four greatest Americans, I still think it is a pity that both he and a visiting general should have used such flippant and slighting expressions—they would have “sacked Lee for his conduct at the battle of Gettysburg”-—about General lee It doesn”t lessen the reputation of General Lee as one of the greatest military leaders w;ho ever lived, and who won his victories under handicaps and against more overwhelming numbers than any other military leader in history. But it does show up his two critics; in a light that hadn't shown on them before, and I am sorry for it. Exactly nobody is fitted to criticize General I.ep except his superiors— and they have yet to be found!
