The biggest holder of property was the Department of Defense, with its worldwide system of bases and other installations—$31 billion worth of real estate and $120 billion worth of equipment and supplies. Of the public domain lands in the United.,, States, including Alaska, the armed forces controlled nearly 19 million acres, with an estimated^current value of $195 million, for military purposes. In addition to this, the Department of Defense held enough real estate outside the socalled public domain to make a grand total of 33 million acrks'tlti*der its control.
When cost to the Government is taken into account, Virginia stands third among the states in the magnitude of military real property investment, exceeded only by California and Texas. According to the. committee report the Department of Defense holds 298, 561 acres in Virginia. The land and improvements cost $1.3 billion to acquire.
