The Regional Scholarship Program at the University of Virginia t6 entering its fifth year under a revised plan instituted by President Colgate W. Darden, Jr., in 1955.
Twenty-five four-year scholarships, ranging from $2,000 to $3,400, will be awarded to Virginia students who are planning to enter die University in September, 1959. One student will be selected from each of the ten congressional districts in Virginia and 15 other •'.will receive scholarships from with in the state at large.
Students are selected for the scholarships primarily on the basis of high school academic achievement, but also on die basis of leadership ability and financial need. There are no restrictions placed on the students choice of fields of study. }
Candidates are nominated - for the scholarships by t h e i r high school principals, who have been asked to submit their nominations by Jauary 26, in order that the process of selection may proceed to the next stages.
Selections are made by ten alumni committees, one in each of the cogressional districts. The alumni committees will choose 50 regional nominees, whp will be invited to the University for final interviews by the University Committee on Scholarships.
Students who do not qualify for one of the top Regional awards are considered for other scholarships offered by the University. . . The Regional Scholarship Program is financed by a bequest of Philip Francis Dumont, alumnus class of 1901. The bequest provides for 100 such scholarships ^during any given year, or 25 to each entering class.
High school principals who have yet to make their nominations are urged to do so before Jannary 26, and mail them to the University of Virginia Committee on Scholarships, in Charlottesville.
