Gross farm inedme in 1955 was $3534 per farm with 583 farms in the county. A comparison with the average farm income of the state for this year is not available; however in 1950, 1945 and 1940 Rappahannock farm income was above the state average.
In 1955 our average farm size was 185.7 acres with a per farm value of $14,355. While our per farm value is higher tthan the state average_our farm size is larger, and «ur per acre value about $25 less.
From 1950 to 1955 there was, in Rappahannock a 19% increase in the number of farmers having “off-the-farm income” above their farm income although there were 63% less farm owners working
