At Sperryville school pupils and teachers were in most protected parts of buildings within two minutes after signal first heard. Pupils upstairs went to auditorium, those downstairs and in smaller building faced inside wall. All windows and doors closed.

At 11:45 a.m. the checkerboard alert was received’ at local headquarters (County Agent’s Office) from Front Royal Police Department who had received the warning at 11:34 a.m. The delay in receiving this message was due to the department calling 2201 instead of 2231.
A fire alarm received from Amissville at .11:20 a.m. served as an additional test in recognition qff the meanings of local sireni signals. Through the cooperation of Mrs. Russie Miller, persons in different parts of the coifhty were asked to tune their radios to Conelrad stations (640 K.C. and 1240 K.C.) Mr. W. A.
