Looking back over 1959 for some guidance in 1960, the beef situation looks quite.like the end of 1950 and the beginning of 1951. The build-up in breeding stock continued, but by September, there were enough new calves coming to market to offset those held back and slaughter figures moved above 1958. Prices responded by dropping off.
For 1960, it looks like more of the same, a continued build-up in total cattle numbers although at a slower rate, a continued increase' in slaughter and a continued decline in prices.
If the cycle runs true to form, this trend will gain momentum in 1961, and prices will keep going down until enough breeding stock is unloaded to cut back the calf crop, probably in 1963 or 19641
