NIXON OPPOSES UNION BOSSES: Vice President Nixon has stated his opposition to the labor bosses as follows: "1 believe that each state has the power to enact or repeal a right-to-work law as its people desire. *'lt would be just as wrong for the federal government to interfere with that power as it would be for the federal government to force all states to accept right-to-work legislation.
"For that reason, I oppose repeal of that section of the Taft-Hartley Act which recognizes the power of the states to adopt such laws, and, similarly, I oppose the enactment of a federal right-to-work Law." (New York Telegram & Sun 10/7/60). THE ISSUE IS CLEAR: Kennedy would albw the labor bosses to force workers to pay union dues as a condition of employment. Nixon defends the rights of the States to protect their citizens against this compulsory unionism.
SENATOR BYRD'S POSITION: In a speech in the Senate in August, Senator Byrd made his position dear: "This is an appropriate time for me to say that I will oppose repeal of authorization for right-to-work laws with aU my strength and ability."
