In a report summing up the work of the division since its establishment by the State ot Virginia 12 years ago.the first statesponsored unit to recognize and treat alcoholism as a disease rather than a crime I)r. Hoff said that the division has th'-.v far provided therapy and rehabilitation to a total of 4.568 patients, a third of them referred by physicians.
Therapy is initiated with a period of hospitaization during which detailed medical, psychologic and social evaluations are completed, Dr. Hoff said. Emphasis during this period he noted is on establishing a confidential relationship between the patient and treatment specialists.
Mo r alcoholics referred for treatment are married and have been living at home, Dr. Hoff pointed out, however, the division does treat the chronic court offender although “the plan of long-term rehabilitative care in a clinic setting has not proved a satisfactory treatment modality for the ‘skid row’ person.”
The Virginia program is largely elf supporting. Sixty-seven per cent of hospitalization costs in the past 12 years have been covered by *'*e parents themselves who are expected pod encouraged to pay for
