A Ride On A Hobby Horse
The great Richmond-Times Dispatch took as wild an editorial ride this Wednesday as I have ever seen. Having made up it’s mind to support the Republican Nixon-Lodge ticket, and having already commited itself to this course, the Dispatch was obviously appalled by the prediction of Mr. Lodge that there would be a Negro in Nixon’s CabinetSaid the sage editor,“It would be a great relief if Henry Cabot Lodge would drop the subject of whether Mr. Nixon, if elected, will put a negro in the cabinet.”
I rather imagine it would be a relief to the Dispatch. But. after all, we believe the people have a right to know the views of the presidential aspirants and their intentions.
The Dispatch then quoted Mr- Lodge as saying “My opinion is that there ought to be a negro in the cabinet and I’ll go further,. I make this prediction that if Richard Nixon, is elected there will be a qualified negro in the cabinet”. The Dispatch plaintively observed that “this is a far cry from making a ‘promise’”. How far?
The author saved the best for last, however, as is appropiate. Here he really got on his hobby horse and, as he rocked, he wrote, “Lets get on with the campaign, and stop discussing these irrelevant, extraneous and almosVwholly political issues.” Here all the time I thought this WrAS a political campaign. No doubt I am also mistaken in the belief that, along with other factors, it is relevant and material in making up my mind how to vote what M Lodge predicts will happen if Mr. Nixon is elected.
