Increase In Forest
Fires Expected
The Virginia Division of Forestry expects an increase in forest fire occurrence within the next two or three weeks. District Fire Chief J. V. Jackson states that anywhere from lj) percent up to SO percent of the yearly total of forest fires occur in the months of October. November and December. The number of fires is dependent on weather conditions _ during the three’month period.'However, the increase in the amount of fuel in the forest, caused by the falling leaves, is a factor in how fast a fire spreads. The increase in the number of people in the woods during hunting season also incrcMes the chance of a fire occurring.
I 'usally, about 50 percent of all fall forest fires are ran-ed by hunters. Warming fires which are not extinguished, cigarettes or pipe ashes dropped on dry leaves, plus fires which start when gafne is illegally smoked from trees, all contribute to the number of forest fires occurring in the fall.
