Representatives of fourteen local organizations met at the Court House in Washington on Friday night, November 25, 1960 to discuss the organization of a Rural Safety Council for Rappahannock County.
W. H. Lyne, County Agent, presided at) this meeting and said that a groi^p of counties in Northern Virginia has been asked by the Virginia Rural Safety Council to organize local councils in the effort to help reduce our accident rate.
Mr. Lyne presented a report on local accidents for the fiscal year 1958-59 that has been compiled in a special survey conducted by the L'.S. Public Health Service, local health department, with the assistance of private physicians in Rappahannock,; Page, and Warren Counties. This report consisted of accidents serious enough to require medical attention but did not show a true picture of the county as those receiving medical attention in Fauquier or Culpeper County were not in the reporting area.
There were 232 accidents reported; 164 male and 68 female. This report) also verified the national average of more accidents occuring in the 0-16 year age group. i
The group agreed that accidents were an outstanding local problem but were in doubt as to what they could do. jMr. Lyne and Mrs. Thornton, local Health Nurse, stressed that; it would be their duty to bring the problem before their respective organizations and with Continued op page ten
