And to this day, for example, large crowds assemble each noon in many of the European cities before the great clocks with animated figures,- waiting to see them go through their mechanical performances worked out for the pleasure of spectators so many centuries ago by the clock makers.
During the 18th Ontuiy the household clock became an imposing piece of furnitute as well as a time piece. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has in its collection a fine ol<f clock, housed in a splendid long-case. *
Ft was made by Christian Former, a Swiss, who with his brother, came to Lampeter in Lancaster Co., Pa., in 1754. They set about making clocks at once in their new location.
