John T. Trumbull, president jf the Warren-RappahannockClarke Tuberculosis Association reported that the 1962 Christmas Seal Campaign has reached $2836.81.
He also reported that admissions to Ennion G. Williams Hospital, which is for non-white tuberculosis patients, increased 5% during year ending June ’62 and over 25% of all admissions were under age 20. For the first time, however, fewer cases were in the advanced stages and there was a 66% decrease in the cases undergoing thoracic surgery. “This is encouraging,” he said, “because it shows that people are finding the disease earlier, but the overall picture is far from good. We know that TB is not licked.”
Mr. Trumbull continued, “The State of Virginia had an increase of 11.2% in cases of TB in 1961. This is the second year of increase, and is a net gain in the active disease category— those in need of treatment and actually or potentially capable of spreading the disease. Half of all newly reported cases occurred among Virginians under 45 years of age. This means that a large number of little children and teenagers have been exposed to TB. In Virginia, 131 men, women and children had their tuberculosis first reported on death certificates in 1961. These are facts!”
“Where were they living? Did they share their germs with members of their families?” were questions which Mr. Trumbull asked when he explained that the Tuberculosis Association is helping to locate persons with active TB and seeing that adequate treatment is available, “Because tuberculosis is preventable,” Mr. Trumbull stated, “when you contribute for Christ-, mas Seals each person is investing in their own good health as ; well as the health of their comj munity. With TB, no one is safe ' until all are safe.”
