Through Haze
Although a thick autumn haze hung over the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park on Saturday, October 14, entrance stations reported 24,602 persons traveled along the Park’s Skyline Drive to see the fall colors. Superintendent R, Taylor Hoskins stated that an additional 32,648 visitors braved fogand haze to view the colorful display on Sunday, October 15.
Because of poor visibility, weekend travel did not approximate the record set October 12 and 13, 1963, when 80,843 visitors swarmed to the Park. However, the mild weather was conducive to hiking along the Park trails svhere a close up look of the foliage showed a great variety of color. The new campground at L.oft Mountain was filled to capacity during the weekend. If Indian Summer weather continues, thousands more will be able to enjoy the brilliant colors during this week and the next. After that the more somber tones of russet and brown of late autumn will be in evidence along the Skyline Drive. Superintendent Hoskins expects' travel to the Park to be moderate to heavy for two more weekends as a lot of people postponed their usual autumn visit because of poor visibility during the past two weekends.
