“Last year's Christmas Seal Campaign made possible two major research grants to faculty members of the Medical College of Virginia this year.Mrs. Vernon Mills, Rappahannock County Christmas Seal Chairman said. One project is to study the metabolic functions of lungs to determine how oxygen is used. The other is to study the role of macrophages in resistance to tuberculosis. Dr. Sami Said, one researcher, told a reporter that “Until recently the lung was thought of as an organ that was simply concerned with the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. This is very important, but it’s becoming increaS" ingly apparent that the lung is also very active in metabolism . . . lung tissue contains at least oneor twochemicals that can affect the blood pressure.“ “Only two months ago we found that the intravenous injections of small amounts of huid extracts of lung producted drastic changes in the olood pressure, in the vessels of the lung and the rest of the body,- he said. “More research and education are needed,- said the chairman, and reported that contributions to date are $400.00 against the goal of $1000.00.
