Some can dig holejs on their own property and bury their own beer cans, pop bottles, oil cans from filling stations, others a re physically unable to do so. Is new industry the answer or improvement of the greatest industry we already have - agriculture? The number of people producing agricultural products, as well as the number of farms are both declining very rapidly in Rappahannock. Even the number of part-time farmers is decreas ing. Digging back into a poor memory I think perha ps this to be our greatest recent (5-10 yr.) change; for sure among the greatest.
What does industry want? I hear they look for a lot of things besides availability of labor force even when this force has high educational levels and relatively high skills. They look at schools, churches availability of recreational facilities as well as hospitals, living conveniences, supply of goods and services, etc. Is getting on welfare, old age retirement, medicare, etc the answer? Maybe for some but, surely we can’t completely abandon individual initiative, pride of accomplishment. A job well done, individually
