Virginia closed out the year 1967 with a very successful record in industrial development. Prospects are bright for impressive gains during the new year. The Commonwealth ran up an enviable record in attracting new and expanding industries within its borders and in creating a business climate in which industry can grow and prosper. The outstanding achievement of the year was the large number of million dollar-plus '%iew plants and expansions. J. Ffank Alspaugh, Director of the Division of Industrial Development, announced that during 1967, 16 new establishments, each investing well over a million dollars, began operations in the Commonwealth. And 11 existing establishments announced expansions in the million dollar or above category. These million dollar-plus expansions and new plants were in addition to scores of smaller ones of the year just ended. Although the Nation’s economy was characterized by a tight money situation during the early months of 1967, Virginia's share of industrial expansion was strongly diversified and the State’s good growth picture was strengthened by these additions to the State’s economy: Some 116 new plants -- 39 of which will account for at least 100 employes each -- located in Virginia during the year. Total employment for these new plants will account for approximately 9,900 new manufacturing jobs when full operation of the new plants is ef-i fected. Expansions of 96 existing plants will add another 6,600 in employment.
