Six May Be Aided by Single Eye Donor A single eye donor may be responsible for bringing |' vision to or correcting eye! defects in as many as six or more individuals, accord-;: ing to a recent statement by a Richmond Eye Bank official.
R. Kenneth Hudgins, Director of the Old Dominion; Eye Bank, says research has; made it possible t<> use different components of donor eyes to restore sight to the blind or cure eye afflictions1 which could result in blindness.
Presently, eye transplantations involve only the cornea of the donor eye, the transparent “shield" which covers the iris of the eye. However, (eye sclera has been found to have considerable promise, Hudgins reports, in other grafting operations. Sclera is the outer white coat of the yee. In cases of retinal detachment, sclera tissue preserved from donor eyes can be used to help correct this deficiency. In fact, throe or more grafts can be made with the sclera from one eye, said Hudgins. Thus, he continued, corneas from the eyes of a donor may bring sight to two persons suffering from total or partial blindness and the sclera from those same donated eyes might be used in several more operations involving detached retinas. The live Bank Director said constant research is enabling medical science to determine more ways of preserving eye material and using it to correct certain eye afflictions.
