New Mail Costs in

Washington at $9,800

To what extent will individuals and business firms in Washington be affected by the new increase in postal rates? How much will their added costs amount to in 1968? It is extimated, on the basis of the latest figures on postal receipts in the local area, released by the Government, that they will have to pony up an additional $1,800 a year. That is 23 percent more than in fiscal 1966. The bill, which breezed through both houses of Congress with little controversy, except with regard to third class mail rates, affects mailings beginning .January 7th. Under its terms, postal revenues will go up by about $900 million a year, considerably more than the $825 million hike that was originally proposed by the Administration

Tied to the measure is a pay raise for government workers. Host Office employees will receive a 6 percent increase and other federal employees, 4.5 percent. As far as the average Washington resident is concerned,
