A FORMAL announcement from Vepco explained the “joint use” agreement for a $20 million transmission project between Virginia Electric and Power Company and the Potomac Edison Company, a subsidiary of the Alleghany Powers System.
In addition to “strengthening electric service to customers,” the proposed line will “eliminate the need for each company to build a separate line at some point in the future.”
The proposal calls for construction of a 500,000 volt transmission line from Vepco’s Mount Storm generating station in Grant County, W.Va. to the existing 500,000 volt transmission system in Northern Virginia, a distance of more than 100 miles. The new circuit is to be built jointly, with approximately equal financial responsibility and ownership.
