RAPPAHANNOCK County’s population is projected to decline to 5,100 by 1980, but this figure represents a loss of only 50 people from the 1971 population estimate by the Bureau of Population and Economic Research at the , University of Virginia, and constitutes an average annual rate of decline of only 0.1 percent for the rest of the decase as compared to an 0.3 percent decrease for the eleven year period from 1960 to 1971.
Manufacturing, which was second to agriculture as the county’s most important basic employer during the 1960’s, is projected to increase its relative share and become the number one basic employer of residents by 1980.
