IT HAS BEEN SAID that to use puns is the lowest form of humor. Well, what would one think when they see a headline in their local paper that reads thus: “Life Getting Un-bear-able?”
Kind of cute, but is our editor becoming punish. I sought the authority and found that actually it was an un-pun, the prefix UN can be used with adjectives, verbs and nouns; said prefix meaning ‘anti’ or ‘not’! So, I guess it is proper to say unbear, not-bear or anti-bear.
I prefer the latter except someone might think one was referring to the sister of one of the cub’s parents; however, Virginians would not experience this problem unless you used the broad A and pronounced it onty-bear. Silly? you bet.
