In one such case, two men called at the home of a Medicare beneficiary, saying one of them was a doctor and was going to give the man an examination. While the‘examination’ was taking place, the other man looked around the house and removed a billfold containing $580.”
Locally, a Front Royal couple recently was bilked of $1,100 by a young man who promised to increase their social security benefits by 30% if they could show him that they knew how to save money. The couple readily displayed their ability to save by tendering the money which the flim-flam artist said he must take to the police department to count.
“Of course, neither the man nor the money was ever seen again,” Mrs. Crumpton reported.
She also said some elderly people “might be too embarrassed to report they have been taken by a confidence scheme.”
