Competitive trail ride
THE TRAIL RIDERS of Rappahannock are sponsoring a Class B. N.A.T.R.C. (North American Trail Ride Conference) this weekend, May 25-26 from Tommy Eastham’s Rucker Farm, Route 647, three miles east of Flint Hill.
The 30 competitors will arrive by 3 p.m. Saturday from five states and Canada. Between 3-6 p.m. horses will be examined by veterinary and horseman judges followed by a ride briefing that evening. Sunday morning, starting at 7:30 a.m. riders will mount their horses in front of judges and ride out over a pre-determined 35-mile course. They are allowed between 6-6 1/2 hours to complete the ride and will be penalized for finishing too early or too late.
Special pulse and respiration check points are
planned along the way to help determine tie horse’s condition. By 4 p.m. everyone should be back in camp to again be examined by judges after which scores will be computed and awards presented at 8 p.m.
Judges . for the ride are Dr. Matt Graves of Madison (veterinarian judge) and Sandra Knox of Burbank, Cal. (horsemanship judge). Anyone wishing to observe is urged to attend.—Patty Alexander
