Confederate General John C. Breckinridge, scrounging for manpower to meet an invading Union army, had ordered the well trained and disciplined cadets to join his forces although they had never been in battle before. In the resulting clash, the 247 VMI cadets performed with great distinction but suffered 57 casualties, ten of'" them fatal. □
