TWO PROPOSED studies, which might cost some $20,000 each, were the cause of confusion at last Thursday’s August meeting of Planning District 9 in Culpeper. One of the studies would be to ascertain the “feasibility” of establishing a regional jail; the other would “identify job training needs and opportunities to assist the unemployed, untrained, or undertrained in practical skills.”
The commissioners — despite some strong 'local support — weren’t convinced a $20,000 study was needed on the jail question, and they expressed confusion over what steps to take in regard to the “manpower” study.
To take first things first, the jail study came up first on the agenda for Thursday night’s meeting, held in the Town Council chambers at Culpeper.
ART WARREN, executive director of the commission, reported that Culpeper, Madison, Orange and Greene Counties’ Boards of Supervisors “have officially endorsed the need for the feasibility study,” and agreed to name people to the study committee. Fauquier and Rappahannock Counties “haven’t been approached directly, but all the others are interested,” he said.
“I don’t think we need any additional jail space in Fauquier,” said John B. Adams, a Fauquier Supervisor.
