Shorter deer season

in county requested

HENRY HUDSON told Rappahannock’s Supervisors he’d like to see Rappahannock’s deer hunting season changed to conform with those counties west of the Blue Ridge. Rappahannock’s season is two weeks longer, ancT'in those two weeks Rappahannock is overflowing with hunters, Hudson said. If the seasons were the same length, hunters would spread out more, he thought.

Deer hunters, at least some of them, trespass over Rappahannock fields and woodlands. “They think they can hunt anywhere in the county except the Shenandoah National Park,” Hudson said. He added that recently he had come upon three hunters on his own land, all hunting without permission. One Rappahannock County farmer has lost a horse to eager deer hunters who “spotlighted” the horse and shot it, he said.

Supervisor Clarence Baldwin, who operates a game checking station at his store near Washington, said most of the deer checked in there have been shot by hunters from Maryland and other Virginia counties, not Rappahannock. The Supervisors told Hudson they will consider his proposal at a later meeting. Any tampering with hunting seasons is bound to be controversial, Supervisor ^ete Luke said, so the Supervisors will not want to take action until hearing from more people.
