DEPUTY Martin Orfila wanted to get the Supervisors’ approval of a “controversial bill.”
The $50 bill covered a medical examination by a Front Royal doctor of a girl who said she’d been raped. “I had the authorization for the investigation, but not for the examination. But I thought to make ends meet we ought to have the exam,” Orfila said.
The Supervisors all hunched in closer toward the table. “Was she really raped?” Chairman Pete Luke asked. “Any arrests made?” another asked.
The answer was no for both questions. The examination showed the girl had had intercourse a few hours earlier, but it was probably with her boyfriend, Orfila said. “We got three different statements from the girl.”
“As it turned out, this girl was rather unreliable, but we didn’t know that at the time,” Sheriff Buntin said.
