In accordance with federal law, eligible veterans and their spouses are allowed to be buried in a national cemetery, A burial with honors is the respectful and appropriate final tribute paid to the men and women who have served our country and made personal sacrifices as members of the military. The ceremony honoring a deceased veteran is an affirmation of the person's life and an expression of the nation's gratitude. Burial benefits include a gravesite at any of the national cemeteries with available space, opening and closing of the grave, a government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate. This document bears the president's signature and expresses the country's grateful recognition of the veteran's service.
