Last year Germany succeed in regaining 75 per cent of its pre-war trade with Turkey, and in Egypt exports have increased three-fold since 1950. Germany controls approximate ly 25 per cent of Iran’s foreign trade. Though a conquered nation Germany has wisely directed her commerce to the sta tegic area of the world. It is an indication that Germany will rise again in thi* family of nations. Incidentally, this activity hy the West German government pi ay play a part in curbing communism, or breaking the (’old War plotted and executed by the Kremlin. Underlying causes of the present world crisis are economic. When world trade among free nations becomes prosperous, those people under communism will be made to see the folly of their position. Here is a real cold war in which the tree people of the world can call tin1 plays and take the lead again. World trade can be the key w hich will open the door of peace. The posi tion of the United States and her principal ally, Britain, is important in this rebirth of economic stability in a world now torn into two parts. Canada has recognized the possibilities and Canadian trade is being developed throughout the world, not only by increased exports but with an increase in imports. Trade is a two-way relation ship. a fact we must recognize and include in our policies. No doubt the subject will be high on the agenda as Prime .Minister Churchill, President-Elect Eisenhower and the old sage, Bernard Baruch, confer. We hope that our future policies will bring a period of prosperous world trade and world peace. .Much depends upon the decisions ol the incoming administration and Congress.
