Hunters Urged To Be
Careful of Fires
One carelessly tossed' cigarette butt or match can destroy more game than that taken by , 1<¥> sportsmen, says State Forester <*• W. Dean. He adda “that forest fires rank as game’s deadliest enemy—yet careless hunters were responsible for starting more than twenty five per cent of the 1601 forest fires burning in Virginia last year.”
Hunting season occurs at a time when forests are the most inflammable, when fire can become very large and extremely destructive to game, game cover, and game food. Forester Dean appeals to hunters entering dry forests and fields to use extreme caution with fire. He recommends the following simple rules:
1. Be sure your match is out-rbreak it.
2. Crush out your cigarette and bury pipe ashes in bare soil.
8. Be careful with campfires— clear a wide space, free from inflammable material before building any fire.
4. Drown yonr fire before leaving—The Virginia law requires
46.9%
